Teacher Collaboration:
Ms. McDaniel brought her Spanish 1 class to the library to check out books in Spanish. Her class will be visiting the library once every month. There will be new additions to the Spanish Fiction and Nonfiction collections as we continue with collection development.
Ms. Perez brings her students every Tuesday to check out books. The more the students interact with the library, the more empowered they feel to explore the collection.
Ms. Rivas brings her ELD2 class to check out books once every month. Students can select any book they find interesting, so reading becomes a personal experience. Reading is extremely important in language acquisition. Multiple, varied, and relevant exposures to text are essential when students are learning a new language.
Technology:
LAUSD Digital Library and Schoology are now fully integrated! Students can access all the databases from inside their Schoology account. No more trying to access the resources remotely... and not being able to. The integration will also make it much easier for teachers to incorporate the Digital Library into their instruction. If you want to learn more about the Digital Library and its resources, schedule a visit to the library.
For all citation nerds out there: Google Docs now has a feature that allows for a simple solution to hanging indentation! In the past, users had to wrestle with the ruler tabs to get the hanging indent going; now, all you have to do is follow these steps:
1. Go to Format from the toolbar
2. Select Align and Indent
3. Go to Indentation Options (last drop down menu option)
4. Under Special Indent, select "Hanging"
5. Click Apply
There you have it! No more fussing with the ruler tabs!
Community Outreach, Public Relations, and Displays:
February is Black History Month. CCHS celebrated by creating a display highlighting Black YA authors and their works available at the library. Representation is so important; people want to know they are seen and feel included in the conversation. For too long, readers of color could not find their stories represented in YA books. Authors like Angie Thomas, Jason Reynolds, and Tomi Adeyemi are changing the publishing landscape, and their success inspires other writers of color to give voice to their experiences. CCHS will continue to support diversity through collection development and reading literacy.
February was also "Blind Date with a Book" month. So many times, amazing books end up lost in the collection. Blind Date allows students to rediscover some of these titles by bringing the books from the shelves and hiding them behind quick, clever descriptions. Students only find out which book they checked out once they leave the library. This gives everyone a chance at literary love!
Mr. Latimer and Ms. Bondy organized a Professional Day to give CCHS students the opportunity to interact with and learn from professionals in the field of entertainment. The day started with mock interviews; professionally dressed, resumes in hand, students came to the library for their "job" interview. The volunteer interviewers commented on how well prepared students were. During period 5, students attended a career panel with five entertainment business professionals—among them, Rita Street, founder of Women in Animation. The panel participants talked about their education, career choices and path, and they offered advice to anyone looking into a career in the entertainment business.
Ms. Shaughnessy's students have created beautiful mandalas, and these objects of art are on display in the library. Take a moment to stop by and enjoy the art our students have produced.

Library Practice:
Library Practice students are working on the final project for Unit 3: Databases and eBooks. Students explored the databases available from LAUSD Digital Library to locate current, reliable articles about their self-selected topics. This time, however, students had to refine their topics into research questions. They learned about broad, narrow, and "just right" research questions and how important it is to have strong questions to guide the research.
Unlike with the last annotated bibliography, when they used Easybib to help with their citations, this time students took advantage of the citation tools from the databases. When using the databases, students have access to ready-made citations for both APA and MLA for the specific articles they are using. If you have ever had to create a Works Cited or Bibliography page, you know how helpful this resource can be!
Collection Development:
The first shipment for book order #1 should be arriving on campus the first week of March. This order focused on suggestions from our school community and nonfiction books that connect to current issues and curriculum topics.
A second order has already been submitted, and it should be approved by mid-March. This order is the first one focusing on updating the Nonfiction collection.
