Teacher Collaboration:
Mr. Basinger brought his World History classes to the library to learn about MLA citation. Students learned about the importance of giving credit to outside sources using the Modern Language Association format. When students learn to give credit to borrowed ideas, they avoid the dreadful danger of plagiarism.
Ms. Johnson brought her Government classes to do research on the impeachment process. Students used a curated list of news articles to learn more about the steps to impeachment, the history of presidential impeachments, and the current impeachment process.
Ms. Miles brought her US History classes to the library for an overview of library research resources. Students were doing research on American figures that impacted US History. Students learned how to use the online library catalog as an Internet search engine (Webpath Express) to get to reliable websites and the basics of database research with LAUSD's Digital Library. All of these resources are available to all CCHS students from the CCHS Library website.
Ms. Rivas brought her ELD2 class to check out books. Students accessed prior knowledge from a library orientation they attended in October to use the online catalog and navigate the genrified collection. Ms. Rivas will be back with her class in December so that students can check out books to read during Winter Break.
Ms. Perez brings her students every Tuesday to check out books. With every visit, students develop a better sense of their reading interests and exercise their search skills. They feel more comfortable in the library and empowered to make decisions about what they want to read.
Technology:
LAUSD's Digital Libraryis an impressive collection of subscription databases available to LAUSD students, staff, and faculty. No matter which subject or topic you are researching, the Digital Library has a database to match your needs. The databases can be accessed fromthe library website (under the "For Students" tab). If you are on campus and using the LAUSD network, you can access the Digital Library without the need of a username/password. If you are using your own network or accessing the databases off campus, use the "Remote Access" feature with your SSO (for students, it is the same username/password they use with Schoology).
The "Remote Access" button can be found at the bottom of the Digital Library page
Students: Use the same username/password combo you use to log into Schoology
Teachers: Use SSO login
Community Outreach, Public Relations, and Displays:
I had the opportunity to attend this month's School Site Council meeting to advocate for the library. In order to quickly communicate the impact of the library in the school community, I created an infographic with information about usage (information from August to November 19). Infographics are a very effective solution to share a lot of information in a visually appealing way. They can also be used in the classroom as an alternative to essays and slide presentations.

Library Practice:
Library Practice students finished Unit 2: The Online Catalog. Working with a self-selected topic, each student created an annotated Works Cited list with five nonfiction books from the CCHS Library collection. They used the catalog to locate ten initial sources; then, they selected the best five options based on given criteria. They spent time evaluating each book, analyzing their qualities, and assessing their research potential. Using their knowledge of MLA format, they created citations for each of their books and added their analysis of the sources as annotation. These lists, once finalized, will become resource guides available from the library website.
Collection Development:
The order placed with the Junior Library Guild is on its way! This is a small order (eight books), but they are great titles for students who are developing their reading skills.
The library has received a budget of $15,000 for collection development! The average age of the nonfiction collection collection is 1998; this means that many of the books on the shelves are outdated. This budget will help update the collection. This budget will also allow the library to continue adding new titles to its YA fiction collection.
In order to guarantee that the collection is a true representation of the school community and its stakeholders, CCHS Library is asking for book suggestions. Suggestions can be made in person at the library or online from the library website. The online formcan be found under the "Resources" tab on the CCHS Library website.
Professional Development:
The second TL PD took place on November 21. With the number of TLs growing across the district, the room was packed! We looked at updates done to Destiny, the library management system used by LAUSD, discussed the importance of read-alouds for all grades, and learned a strategy to help students develop quality research questions. These meetings are great opportunities for TLs to exchange ideas and best practices.
The library computers are getting new monitors. The monitors and keyboards will be moved and placed on top of the computer tables. This new setup will make it easier for students to work as it will eliminate the annoying glare from the lights on the glass tops.
