Teacher Collaboration:
October was a busy month at MACHS Library. In order to collect data about our students' information literacy skills, every English class visited the library to take the TRAILS pre-assessment. 9th- and 10th-grade classes took the 9th-grade assessment; 11th- and 12th-grade classes took the 12th-grade assessment. It took a lot of work to set everything up, but now we have data from every student who was present, and I will be working with teachers as we analyze the results and plan for future instruction.
An important part of TRAILS was gaining student buy-in. Here is the lesson plan that was used to explain to students why they were asked to take the pre-assessment.
TRAILS visits also allowed new students to be introduced to and veteran students to get reacquainted with the library and its rules and procedures. Students also had an opportunity to visit MACHS Library website since TRAILS was embedded into the website.
Unfortunately, more than 100 students were absent at the time their classes took the pre-assessment. I want to work with Advisory teachers to have absent students take the assessment during Advisory.
If you are curious about how our students did on the TRAILS pre-assessment, you can check results here. The PDF documents have overall class results, and the Excel files have students' individual scores.
Ms. Diaz brought her ELD 3 class for a library orientation. Students learned how to use the catalog to find books, how to use DDC and alpha order to locate books in the stacks, and used this information on a treasure hunt. Then, students selected books for pleasure reading. The goal of the library orientation is to make young people feel independent and self-reliant as they search for information for personal or academic purposes.
Thank you, Ms. Aghamal, Ms. Diaz, Mr. Doherty, Mr. Gauthier, Ms. Gomez, Mr. Madubuko, Ms. Martinez, Ms. Vandermeer, and Ms. Wiley. You are awesome!
Technology:
It looks like the option to access students' PINS from Schoology is down. You can still find PIN numbers by logging into MyData and following these steps.
TRAILS has made possible for teachers and TLs everywhere to assess students and find out where they stand as far as their information literacy skills go. Unfortunately, the website is scheduled to be taken down June 2019. Hopefully, the website will be made available for those who choose to host it.
Community Outreach, Public Relations, and Displays:
It is no secret that MACHS Library loves Halloween. To celebrate the season, the library was decorated with ghosts, ghouls, and all sorts of scary creatures. Students were happy to see the library in all of its Halloween glory. LIbrary displays were created highlighting the spooky and scary in MACHS Library collection, and many books were checked out by students in search of a good scare.
MACHS Library and the Staff Social and Wellness Committeesponsored a Halloween Costume Contest during lunch on Halloween. The contest was open to students and teachers alike. Ms. Vandermeer won the Teacher category with her Paddington Bear costume, and Pamela Diaz won the Student category with her Incredibles costume.
A big thanks to:
• Ms. Vandermeer for helping to organize the contest and for donating the amazing trophy given to the winner of the Teacher category.
• Ms. Lopez and the Leadership Crew for setting up the audio system, providing the spooky music, and always being awesome MCs.

Library Practice:
Students have finished Unit 1: Basic Library Practice Skills. They are now trained to perform library tasks such organize and interfile books, check in/out materials, keep the library organized, and offer exceptional customer service. For Unit 2, students will become search experts as they explore the search possibilities of the online catalog.
Collection Development:
The first order from the $10,000 MACHS budget will be placed by the end of November. Please let your students know that suggestions are welcomed and always honored. If they have a book that they would like to find in our collection, ask them to stop by MACHS Library and add their suggestion to the Suggestions box. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Maintenance: We continue to have issues with trash left in the library. It would be great if MACHS Library were to be vacuumed periodically. The presence of trash left on the stairs after lunch has increased. Please, make an effort to ask students to dispose of their trash once they are done with lunch. October has seen an increasing number of roaches in and around the library; this is a most upsetting trend.
