Teacher Collaboration:
Ms. Aghamal brought her 9th-grade Advisory class to activate their email accounts. Now, her students can access Schoology and their LAUSD Gmail email.
Ms. Burton brought her Creative Writing class to type their two-act play.
Mr. Gauthier and Mr. Madubuko brought their classes to the library to activate email/reset password, use Google Drive, and type the final draft of their Nature vs. Nurture essay. Students are becoming more comfortable with using the Drive not only to type and store content but to create and manipulate their writing for more creative control.
Ms. Gomez's classes came to MACHS Library for a library orientation and book checkout. The orientation helped students be independent agents when they visit MACHS Library looking for books or information.
Technology:
As more and more teachers start using Schoology and Google Drive, it is essential that our students can access them. For students who are having difficulty with their password, teachers can help by providing them with their email, ID, and PIN. Teachers can find this information from MyData or Schoology. Don't know how to? Here is a video tutorial on how to access MyData, or you can go to Schoology and follow the steps below to access student PINS.
Community Outreach, Public Relations, and Displays:
College-Bound Workshop (Sept. 13): MACHS Library had the pleasure to welcome back two of our most successful graduates, Williams Rojas (UC San Diego) and Denisse Vielmas (UC Riverside). They organized a workshop attended by many of our EL students to motivate them to dedicate themselves to school and pursue college. Williams and Denisse are great role models for our students. They successfully graduated and received scholarships to two of the most prestigious universities in the country. They came back to inspire our students and show them they can aspire to bigger and better things.
Banned Books Week (Sept 23-28): Every year, libraries around the country celebrate Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week was first celebrated in 1982 as a reaction to a sudden increase in the number of challenged books in schools, libraries, and bookstores. MACHS Library celebrates Banned Books Week with a display of challenged and banned books available in the library and a website full of resources: interactive timeline, articles, activities, and a list of challenged and banned books in the collection.
Girls Build Summit (Sept. 28): What do you get when you bring 10,000 young women together? CHANGE! This is the second time MACHS joined the Girls Build Summit. The focus of this year's summit was voting. Alex Padilla, California Secretary of State, and Shonda Rhimes, Hollywood writer and producer, were among the inspiring voices urging young women to take action and vote. 37 young women from MACHS attended the event, and many of them pre-registered to vote on the spot.
Williams Rojas talks to our ELD students about the path to college.

Library Practice:
We are starting the year with Unit 1: Basic Library Practice Skills. This unit prepares students for the practical side of working in a library: library collections, DDC, checking in/out, keeping the library clean and organized. Unit 1 provides students with organizational skills that they can apply to other areas of their lives.
Collection Development:
We received the order placed back in June. We added more than 200 books to the collection! This year, we will be able to add even more resources to the library as we will be receiving $10,000 in funding from MACHS.
Events:
SQ Interview Workshop (Sept 5)
SQ Scholarship Workshop (Sept 7)
SQ Makeup Testing (Sept 12)
SQ College Workshop: USC (Sept 21)
Teen Court (Sept 26)
Maintenance: Whenever food is brought into the library, with it comes the threat of pests such as ants and roaches. The expectation is that, if food is to be consumed, those who bring food and consume it must be responsible for cleaning up after themselves. It is disappointing to find trash, bits of food, and empty bottles left behind after PD. As adults, we must model the behavior we want from our students.
Ongoing Projects: Schoolwide TRAILS Testing, October
