Teacher Collaboration:
Ms. Bondy and Ms. Mazenod brought her 9th graders to the library for a library orientation session. Students learned about CCHS Library rules and procedures; the new library website; the online catalog and keyword searches; DDC (nonfiction) and genres (fiction); and how to use their PaperCut account. The goal of orientation is to help students become more independent as they come to CCHS Library and look for books and information.
Ms. Meza brought her students to activate their email accounts. Students must know their LAUSD Gmail account to access a number of important educational resources (Schoology, Goggle Drive, etc).
Ms. Papadopoulos sent her 11th graders to the library so that they could take an information literacy skills pre-assessment. This information will help as we prepare students for short-term (SBAC) and long-term (college and career) educational and professional goals.
Ms. Perez brings her students every Tuesday so that they select books to read for pleasure.
Technology:
The library has a new website! The website went live early September, and it will soon replace the current library website. The URL is easy to remember: cchslibrary.org. The website allows students, faculty, and staff to access reading and information literacy resources 24/7. All you need is a device and Internet connection!
The library calendar is now online! Want to know if CCHS Library is available for a class visit? Check the calendar! If the time slot you want is available, email the library at [email protected], or stop by the library. Please fill out the Library Visit Online Request. The information you provide on the online request allows the library to better prepare for your visit.
Community Outreach, Public Relations, and Displays:
September is Banned Books Week time! This event was created by the American Library Association in 1982 after an increase in the number of books being challenged and banned. Celebrated during the last week of September, this is a time for the book community to come together in defense of our freedom to read.
CCHS Library celebrated with a website with historical background, articles, resources and activities, and a display highlighting some of the most beloved YA books and the reason why they were challenged or banned. Banned books in the collection are labeled, so students can select them and join the fight against censorship.

Library Practice:
Library Practice is an academic elective in which students learn college-level research skills. Students also learn the basics of how a library is managed, from interfiling to circulation and customer service.
Students finished Unit 1: Library Basics. They learned about the library and its collections, DDC and alphabetical order, genrefying the collection, and interfiling. For Unit 2: The Online Catalog, students will learn how to use the online catalog to find print materials. They will become experts as they learn how to use the catalog features to refine their searches. By the end of Unit 2, students will produce an Annotated Works Cited using MLA citation.
Collection Development:
Over the summer, the library received two huge book orders. Hundreds of books were added to the Nonfiction, the Fiction, and the Graphic Novel collections.
The Nonfiction collection has been updated with books about current social issues, diseases, careers, city guides, and world and American culture and geography. The Fiction collection has grown with the hottest and most popular titles in YA literature. To the Graphic Novel collection, new manga titles, new volumes to popular series, and award-winning graphic novels were added.
Please let your students know that CCHS Library has many new and exciting titles just waiting to be checked out!
